Misspellings

What are Misspellings

Misspellings allow you to correct specified search terms that are commonly misspelled by visitors and not automatically detected by the search engine. By defining the correct spelling of an incorrectly spelled search term, the engine will replace the misspelled query with the correct one to display results from this.

Example

Adding a misspelling between “libry” and “library” will make sure that all searches for “libry” are automatically replaced with a search for “library”.

Misspellings are language-specific and will affect all engines in the selected language.

How to create a Misspelling

With misspellings, you can manually add terms to be corrected automatically in the search. A term that you added a misspelling for will always be corrected to the spelling you’ve defined.

  1. In the navigation, select Tools › Misspellings.
  2. Ensure the correct language is selected in the dropdown at the top right of the screen.
  3. Click the New button at the top of the table.
  4. Fill out the misspelled term in the Misspelling field.
  5. Fill out the correctly spelled search term in the Correct spelling field.
  6. Click Create.

You have now added a Misspelling. All of your search engines using this language will correct the defined misspelling from now on.

Best practice for misspellings

The Misspellings feature allows you to add custom corrections of misspellings. However, it is not the only way the search engine will attempt to correct an incorrectly spelled search term. Before you set up a bunch of misspellings for common search terms, it can be good to understand what is supported out of the box.

What to consider before setting up a Misspelling pair

Cludo has a lot of advanced analyzing on search terms, which can automatically correct misspelled search terms. So start by simply running a test search with the misspelled search term and see if you get the expected results.

Cludo supports fuzzy matching, which allows letters to be skipped or switched neighboring letters. The search engine will automatically correct the following cases without any misspellings added:

Examples

If a user searches for “recieve,” the search engine might automatically return results for “receive” without requiring a specific misspelling pair.

Remember that misspellings are always language specific and will affect all engines with the given language.

How do you find inspiration for misspellings?

Look for searches with no results or a low click-through rate (ineffective searches) to find out where it makes sense to add a manual misspelling. Being reactive when setting up misspellings ensure that the configuration is based on actual use cases rather than hypothetical misspellings that may never occur.
